Impact: 1 Month manual reporting cycle = 2 seconds live-update dashboard

1. The Problems

  • Executives had to review manually-generated product-metrics reports, they couldn't easily identify which ones needed immediate attention or support resulting into delayed decision-making, cost, risk and inability to prioritize resources most needed

  • Inconsistent metrics products made it hard to compare performance fairly or track progress overtime

  • Manual reporting scattered across different products and formats

  • Teams spending 10 hours monthly consolidating data from multiple products into reports for strategic decisions

  • No unified view of all products

The Director of my organization said:

We are at the pilot seat, responsible for helping our customers get where they want - safely and quickly as possible

2. The Inspiration and Thought Process

  • Cockpit Dashboard

    • Brainstormed on the competitors in the market and in adjacent criticality as Automobile Instrument cluster, Speedometers and dials.

    • Identified and drew parallels to the applications based on Design Principles

  • Glanceably-quick

    • Time is money. One glance should suffice the decision-making.

3. The Cross-functional Collaboration

01
Minimal Data

  1. Identified and surfaced 3 Metric per product on the dashboard

  2. To avoid cognitive overload for the executives when drilling deeper into individual products, they access detailed product level metrics in the same consistent format

02
Color Logic

  1. Each metric had threshold for red, yellow and green products

  2. Red metrics got higher priority in the dashboard sort order surfacing the most critical issues first - similar to how aviation controls system prioritize alerts

03
Triage Logic

  1. Real-time data architecture,

  2. Dashboard layout design

  3. Color-coded priority logic

  4. Sorting algorithm

  5. Drill down navigation into product details

  6. When users click on a product or metric, they navigation deeper to see detailed product level data instead of just the summary view
